Shibboleth on Windows

Given the requirement to support a diverse range of directory configurations, the Shibboleth Identity Provider software sometimes requires a relatively complex manual configuration to integrate with an organisation's local directory environment. Due to the prevalence of Microsoft Windows Active DirectoryŽ, an effort is under way to streamline the installation and configuration of Shibboleth specifically for that environment, through the creation of an installer package.

JISCmail join the federation

JISCmail has joined the UK Access Management Federation as a Service Provider (SP) so that users of JISCmail can now make use of the Shibboleth Single Sign on infrastructure, allowing individuals to have a single set of credentials at their home organisation to authenticate them to the mailing list service and other Shibboleth enabled services. This will ease the burden on people having to remember countless username and password variations across multiple service providers.

The UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research uses the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) standards for the communication of authentication, entitlement and attribute information between member organisations. The SAML standards can be used in many different ways, allowing the implementation of different types of federated communities.

One of the unique issues facing the UK adoption of the SAML standard through the UK Access Management Federation is to ensure that the UK education community continues to be able to access Athens resources. To support this requirement, JISC has funded Eduserv to develop and maintain two gateways to the UK federation. These gateways are known as the Federation Gateway Services.

VeriSign Secure Site Pro certificates now accepted

In addition to the basic VeriSign Secure Site certificates previously accepted by the UK Federation, Secure Site Pro certificates with Server Gated Cryptography are now also accepted, enabling stronger encryption from old browsers if required.
